MOUNT ARAFAT, Saudi Arabia: Under the scorching sun, Muslims from across the globe gathered Saturday at the sacred Mount Arafat in Saudi Arabia for a day of intense worship and reflection. Following in the footsteps of prophets, this ritual is considered the pinnacle of the Hajj pilgrimage.
Mount Arafat, also known as the Hill of Mercy, holds a special significance as pilgrims stand together. Asking God for mercy, blessings, prosperity, and good health. The mount is located about 20 kilometers (12 miles) southeast of Makkah. It is historically significant as the site where Prophet Muhammad delivered his Farewell Sermon 1,435 years ago. Advocating for equality and unity among Muslims.
“It’s indescribable,” said Ahmed Tukeyia, an Egyptian pilgrim. Upon his arrival at a tent camp at the base of Mount Arafat on Friday evening.
Hajj, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world. Officially began on Friday when pilgrims moved from Makkah’s Grand Mosque to Mina, a desert plain nearby. This year, Saudi authorities expect the number of pilgrims to surpass 2 million, nearing pre-pandemic levels.
The pilgrimage is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, requiring all Muslims to undertake the five-day Hajj at least once in their lifetime, provided they are physically and financially able to do so.
