Discovering Armenia: A Journey Through Food, Wine, Culture, and Nature

Discovering Armenia: A Journey Through Food, Wine, Culture, and Nature

Armenia, nestled in the Caucasus region, is a land of rich heritage, vibrant culture, and breathtaking landscapes. As a travel destination, Armenia offers a tapestry of experiences waiting to be discovered.

With the long weekend coming up and daily flights from the UAE and Doha, Insider MENA writer Dan Fahy (aka @foodwriterdan) went to explore the nation and find the best way to spend a few days in this unique place.

Exploring Yerevan & the Neighboring Wine Scene

Yerevan is a city that seamlessly combines ancient heritage with modern culture. Whether visiting historical landmarks, indulging in delicious cuisine, or simply enjoying the vibrant street life, Yerevan promises unforgettable memories.

Armenia’s wine scene masterfully blends ancient tradition and modern innovation. Known as one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world, Armenia boasts a winemaking history that dates back over 6,000 years. The country’s diverse terroirs and indigenous grape varieties, such as Areni, produce distinctive wines that gain international recognition.

Wine enthusiasts can explore numerous vineyards and wineries, particularly in the Vayots Dzor and Ararat regions, where they can sample rich reds, crisp whites, and unique fruit wines. With wine festivals, tasting tours, and a growing number of boutique wineries, Armenia is quickly establishing itself as a must-visit destination for wine lovers.

Van Ardi Estate Winery

Journey to the picturesque Aragatsotn region and visit Van Ardi Estate Winery. Set amidst rolling vineyards and majestic mountains, this family-owned winery offers guided tours and tastings that showcase the essence of Armenian terroir. Guard your ears, ring the bell, and make a wish at the top of the bell tower!

If time allows, head down the road after to the Wine History Museum of Armenia to learn about some of the ancient techniques used in winemaking and be ready for a haunting surprise near the end of the tour.

Ararat Museum

Pay homage to Armenia’s most iconic spirit (and Winston Churchill’s favorite) at the Ararat Museum. Learn about the art of brandy production and sample exquisite, aged spirits that have earned international acclaim.

In Vino Bar

Sample a diverse selection of well-priced Armenian and international wines at this fabulous bar on the buzzing Saryan street. With its cozy atmosphere and knowledgeable staff, it’s the perfect place to uncover your new favourite tipple. Look out for Sargis and get his latest recommendations as they always have something new and special in stock. Enjoy some tasty cheeses and cold meat cuts if you’re feeling peckish and vibe to the brilliant playlist.

Minas Cocktail Bar

Unwind and savour expertly crafted cocktails at MINAS Cocktail Bar. With its stylish art-forward setting, it’s the perfect place to say “Kenadz!” (“Cheers!” in Armenian) to your Yerevan adventure. For those with a fruity side, ask for their “off-menu” take on a pina colada. It was a group favorite!

Sergey Parajanov Museum

One figure who embodies the spirit of Armenian creativity and defiance is Sergey Parajanov. A visionary filmmaker and artist, Parajanov defied Soviet censorship to create works of beauty and originality. His films, including “The Color of Pomegranates” and “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors,” are celebrated as masterpieces of world/art cinema, showcasing the rich tapestry of Armenian culture and folklore. His museum honours him in a beautiful way and gives unparalleled insight into the life of this national treasure and his brilliant use of recycled materials.

The Matenadaran Institute (officially the Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts)

With views overlooking the city, the Matenadaran museum complex, located in its original building just outside the city centre, has expanded from a single hall in 1957 to fifteen halls featuring thousands of exhibits, including manuscripts, documents, and miniatures. It’s a fascinating journey through time with intact manuscripts from as far back as the 7th century.

Black Angus

A beloved burger chain in Yerevan, Black Angus is renowned for its juicy, rich patties served in fluffy buns. It’s no wonder it’s been voted the number one burger joint on TripAdvisor for Armenia.

Tavern Riverside

In Dubai, the “dinner and a show” trend has really taken off and if this is something that interests you, then Tavern Riverside is a must visit whilst in Yerevan.

At over 600 covers, the restaurant spans a huge footprint with a stage and open theatre where you will be entertained with world-class musical acts and culturally relevant shows alongside barbequed meat, delicious salads and other Armenian staples.

A short trip outside of Yerevan

Armenian cuisine is a delightful fusion of flavors, influenced by its diverse history and geography. From traditional dishes to innovative culinary creations, here are some must-visit establishments to tantalize your taste buds:

Yasaman

After exploring Yerevan, take a trip an hour out of town to visit the beautiful Lake Sevan. On the water’s edge sits Yasaman Restaurant, where you can spend a few hours enjoying a selection of traditional delicacies, including Armenia’s unique take on baklava.

Tava

For a modern twist on Armenian cuisine in a delightful setting, look no further than Tava. This chic restaurant combines traditional flavors with contemporary flair, offering a menu that delights the senses. A thirty-minute drive from Lake Sevan, it’s well worth a visit – the skillet dishes are not to be missed, with the vibrant creator’s love felt in every dish.

Dilijan

A short walk from the impressive Tava is the quaint, historic town of Dilijan. Famous for its spas, craft workshops, and picturesque National Park, there’s a little something for everyone. After exploring, visit the guesthouse, Im Toon for drinks and snacks on the balcony. The views are truly something special.

Tsaghkunk

A visit to this part of the country isn’t complete without stopping by Tsaghkunk. Central to the Gagarin Project—a venture aiming to create a self-sufficient, creative community through innovative, sustainable farming and building techniques—you can experience local traditions by watching the making of lavash, the local flatbread, at Tsaghkunk Restaurant’s Glkhatun (a traditional room for entertaining guests).

Afterward, head to the neighboring restaurant for elevated Armenian dining. Enjoy great food and spectacular views in a luxurious, minimalist Scandinavian setting.

Discovering Armenia’s Natural & Ancient Beauty

One of the real highlights of Armenia is its stunning countryside. The journey through to Tatev is a long one, but with so much to see on the way, it’s a must-do.

Areni Caves & Noravank

1hr45 south of Yerevan you can unearth the secrets of Armenia’s past at the Areni Caves. Archaeological excavations have revealed evidence of ancient winemaking and ritual practices, shedding light on the early civilizations that called this land home. Afterwards, make your way down to Noravank for a quick stopover to see the hilltop monastery, finishing off with lunch at Vorskan in Vayk before the next adventure south.

Tatev Monastery

A two-hour drive from Areni brings you to the magical region of Tatev. Begin your sightseeing by exploring the architectural marvels of Tatev Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site nestled amidst rugged mountains. Wander through ancient churches, chapels, and fortifications, and soak in the spiritual atmosphere of this sacred place.

Tatev / Wings of Tatev

After exploring the monastery ensure you have tickets to ride the Wings of Tatev, the world’s longest reversible aerial tramway, and marvel at the breathtaking vistas along the way. Stop for an hour before you take the cable car back and have a couple of local beers on the beanbags outside whilst gazing at the mesmeric views.

Karahunj, “the Armenian Stonehenge”

Discovering Armenia: A Journey Through Food, Wine, Culture, and Nature

One of the hidden gems in the country and a favourite of locals, Karahunj is an indescribably beautiful spot to visit whilst driving back from Tatev. For the adventurous, it’s a great place to camp out but if time doesn’t allow, stay for a thrilling sunset before heading back to the city of Yerevan.

While Armenia is a land of beauty and wonder, it has also faced its share of struggles, both past and present. From the legacy of the Armenian Genocide to the recent conflicts in Artsakh, the country bears the scars of its tumultuous history. Yet, amid adversity, the Armenian people have demonstrated resilience and strength in preserving their cultural heritage and moving ahead towards a brighter future.

Whether you’re savoring a sumptuous meal, sipping fine wine, or marveling at centuries-old monasteries, Armenia captivates the senses and leaves an indelible impression on the soul. So pack your bags, embark on a journey of exploration, and let the beauty of Armenia unfold before you.

We fell in love with the unimaginable beauty, the wonderful people and the thriving bar scene and would recommend anyone to go pay a respectful visit whilst many areas are still barely touched by the impacts of tourism. A magical country.

the scene is evolving at a rapid pace with pioneers like Tsaghkunk Restaurant and Tava leading the way. Expect a lot of bread, a lot of meat and a lot of local cheese! Make sure you try the lavash (the local bread) and dolma (their take on stuffed vine leaves).

the private tour was brilliantly organized by Nane and the team but there’s limited public transport links out of the city. Download Yandex (the Uber/Careem equivalent) to get around town.
